Data from Texas shelters indicate that 34 percent of pet-owning individuals who contacted crisis lines in fiscal year 2023 listed transportation distance exceeding 120 miles as the primary reason they remained in place. Households with livestock or working dogs face additional constraints because standard boarding contracts exclude animals used for ranch operations.
The grant supplies up to $40 per day for boarding and vaccination costs for a maximum of three pets per household. In Texas this structure directly offsets the documented shortage of facilities willing to accept mixed-species placements common in border and ranching counties.
